"[I have chosen to translate this play, hoping to make it more accessible to a greater number of readers. I have created as much as is possible a translation faithful to the original content, structure, flavor, and the author's intent. An objective examination of El trato de Argel confirms that it is the foundation upon which Cervantes explores his most prevalent themes and develops his literary technique. The themes of love, honor, and virtue illustrate the major characteristics of the main characters who exemplify the best that Spain has to offer; the themes of suffering and captivity, developed against the realistic setting of Algiers, reveal a thematic unity that Edward H. Friedman refers to as "conceptual unity." A comparison of El trato de Argel and Don Quixote shows the beginnings of certain patterns, including the use of autobiographical information and episodes that are vital to Cervantes' literary theory. Further study reveals that this drama contains an early manifestation of multiple levels of perspective and metatheatrical traits that are enhanced by language layered with multiple levels of meaning. A combination of Lionel Abel's basic principles of metatheater and T. A. O'Connor's reinterpretation of role-playing provides a new way to evaluate Cervantes' works. While Cervantes' later works have been examined for "positive" and "negative" role-playing, these ideas have been used here for the first time to analyze El trato de Argel."]
