Commentary Four travelers (four in the text, only two in the illustration) arrive to the inn and Rocinante begins to move to smell one of the mares, leaving don Quixote almost hung by his hand tied to a window, but he has not fallen yet.
The innkeeper, his daughter and Maritornes should not appear yet, but Coypel prefers theatrical compositions with many figures.
Schley's well-detailed engraving is perfect to Coypel's baroque style.
Notes 1 - Plate IX (in the French edition, the plates aren't numbered).
2 - Signed in 1742.
3 - Copied after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1728-30).
4 - The composition has been turned and the format now is vertical, so Schley has enlarged the trees and the inn (two more windows).
