Commentary | Reference to the tale of the Knight of the Lake as told by don Quixote in defense of chivalry novels.
Third of three illustrations about this tale; in the castle, a maiden enters unexpectedly and tells the knight that she is enchanted. Illustration in keeping with Romanticism and Doré's liking for legendary scenes. The setting is prodigious; the detailed arquitecture is inspired by Spanish Gothic architecture (notice the Spanish coat of arms); Doré sketched some Spanish monuments during his journey in 1861-62 that could have inspired this illustration, as San Juan de los Reyes (Toledo) or the Capilla Real (Granada). Drawing and engraving are excellent. |
