Commentary | Two different scenes in the same plate (archaic):
In the background, the first one: don Quixote attacking the windmills while Sancho, knelt, prays. On the right, two Benedictine monks on their mules (?). In the foreground, the second one: don Quixote fights with the Basque, while a Basque lady observes them from her carriage. The Basque holding a shield (?) is not accurate to Cervantes' text; it should be a cushion. Drawing and engraving are very acceptable despite some disproportions in background figures. |
Notes | 1 – Copy after Clouzier's engraving (Paris: Compagnie des Libraires, 1700) after Savery's illustration for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 (also in Brussels: Mommarte, 1662 and Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73); Sancho´s figure is new.
2 - Worn plate. |
