Commentary | Don Quixote and Sancho discover what was causing a strong noise during the previous night (fulling mills); accurate to Cervantes' text, Sancho remains behind Rocinante observing the fulling mills through its legs.
It's usual in Houghton's illustrations to find the effect of "something" on the characters, but that "something" is not represented, what causes a good sense of suspense and curiosity only satisfied by the text itself. Drawing and engraving are excellent. |
