Commentary The illustration includes two elements (both joined by vegetal elements): a headpiece and an initial.
The headpiece presents Cervantes' bust crowned with laurel wreaths by the Fame and by several gentlemen (one of them reading Don Quixote. It also appears a wingged female figure lashing and expelling some writers who envy Cervantes' fame (envy is represented by the snakes).
The whole illustration is excellent and has been concived with great originallity.
The initial "C" includes the representation of Cide Hamete Benengeli.
Notes 1 - L. Estebanillo has signed the most of the initials of this edition as "Estevanillo". The plate is signed in Barcelona, 1859.
