Commentary | "His whole family was a house Keeper something turned of forty".
Illustration resolved as a genre scene. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period setting, clothes and furniture; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1898 in Sevilla and presented at the Exposition of Fine Arts of Barcelona (1898).
2 - "En tres láminas, muy estudiadas, nos presenta sucesivamente el artista al ama, que trasteando en la despensa, nos sonríe sencillamente; á la rolliza sobrina que, de puro vergonzosa, no se atreve á levantar los ojos del suelo; al mozo de campo y plaza, que aparece bien plantado entre la silla del caballo y la podadera que están en el suelo. Acaso sobrepuja á las otras figuras en mérito, como acabado estudio del natural, este gañán admirablemente dibujado" (José Ramón Mélida: “Don José Jiménez Aranda y su "Quijote"", vol. I TEXTO, p.
