Commentary | Conventional composition.
Don Quixote knelt down, the innkeeper with a book and a sword, doña Molinera holding the spurs, doña Tolosa (without don Quixote's sword) and a boy with a candle (two more figures do not appear in Cervantes' text). Monumental figures, well-drawn and engraved, and clearly-influenced by Vanderbank's style (see Vanderbank's same episode illustration in London: Tonson, 1738). Light and shadow effects (moon light) masterly reproduced by engraving. |
