Commentary | The figures are so un-detailed that the scene is almost incomprehensible.
In the foreground, it is supposed to be the bojiganga stealing Sancho's donkey. In the middle ground, the cart with actors of Angulo el Malo's company (Devil, Death, Cupid, Angel, Emperor, Queen and Knight or Soldier). On the left, Sancho running(?) to help don Quixote (background); the knight should appear falling from Rocinante. Simple drawing and clumsy engraving. |
Notes | 1 – Same wooden block first cut for Barcelona: Juan Jolis, 1755, copied after Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735, badly copied after Diego de Obregón’s illustration (Madrid: Andrés García de la Iglesia, 1674).
2 - The action is quite clearer in the original illustrations. |
