Commentary | Well-known scene and composition.
In the foreground, don Quixote fallen on the ground and defeated by the Knight of the White Moon (Sansón Carrasco). In the background, Sancho, don Antonio Moreno and the viceroy. Scene set in Barcelona sea shore (port and galleys). Simple drawing and clumsy engraving. |
Notes | 1 – Same wooden block first cut for Barcelona: Juan Jolis, 1755, copied after Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735, badly copied after Diego de Obregón’s illustration (Madrid: Andrés García de la Iglesia, 1674).
2 - This same illustration has been used for "Don Quixote defeats the Knight of the Mirrors" (14:2). |
