Commentary | Don Quixote, after having fought with a flock of sheep, has been stoned by the shepherds; Sancho counts how many teeth remain in his mouth.
From the whole episode, it has been chosen a comical/kind scene that shows the mutual care relation between don Quixote and Sancho; it has been chosen neither the previous fight nor the next scene (don Quixote and Sancho vomiting), two scenes of crude humour. In the background, the shepherds bringing the flock together. Excellent composition, drawing and engraving; highly-detailed illustration. |
Notes | 1 – Copy in reduced format after Grignion’s plate with Hayman’s design for London: Millar, 1755.
2 – Same plate first engraved for London: T. Osborne, 1761 (2nd edition of T. Smollet’s translation). |
