Commentary In the foreground, at night and lighted by a fallen torch, don Quixote aims his lance against Alonso López, one of the ecclesiastics accompanying a dead body (in the background his companions running away).
Sancho observes him holding a chicken; "andaba ocupado desbalijando una acémila de repuesto que traían aquellos buenos señores bien abastecida de cosas de comer" (19:1).
Good drawing and engraving.
Notes 1 – Copy in reduced format after Ravenet’s plate with Hayman’s design for London: Millar, 1755.
2 – Same plate first engraved for London: T. Osborne, 1761 (2nd edition of T. Smollet’s translation).
