Commentary | Simple composition, very influenced by Coypel's design (Paris: Surugue, 1724). Micomicona falls on her knees before don Quixote, who asks her to stand up. The barber, disguised with a beard as her squire, laughs. Cardenio and the barber, hidden behind one tree, observe the scene. Sancho looks at the viewer. Don Quixote's arms remain hanged.
Drawing and engraving are clumsy (see don Quixote's forced figure). |
Notes | Accompanied by the poem:
"Our Knight, the Princess in a humble strain Implores to fix her on her Throne again; Mounting his steed, he vows, without delay, Giants shall fall, and Crowns his arms obey". |
