Commentary | The scene is resolved with the basic composition.
Micomicona (Dorotea) falls on her knees before don Quixote and he tries to stand her up. The barber, disguised with a beard, laughs, while Sancho holds the basin. Behind the trees, the priest and Cardenio are hidden. Clumsy drawing and engraving; the figures are disproportionately small. |
Notes | 1 - Copy of Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1724) through Picart's copy (La Haye: Hondt, 1746). Both 1746 and 1777 copies with the same vertical format. Both c. 1724 and 1777 illustrations with the same composition; in 1746 it is turned.
2 - In Cushing's copy, tomes I and II are bound together. |
