Commentary Don Quixote, on Rocinante (the innkeeper holds its reins), arrives at the inn; here, he encounters two "ladies" or party girls ("mujeres del partido") to whom don Quixote says that they must not be afraid of him (notice his gesture).
In the background, a swineherd blowing a horn; don Quixote confuses him with a dwarf welcoming him.
The setting has nothing to do with real Manchegan architecture.
Notes 1 - Plate I.
2 - Facsimile reproduction of Mills' engraving in vol. 3 of Hogarth Illustrated by John Ireland (London: J. & J. Boydell, 1791-98).
3 - Copy after Hogarth's illustration for London: Tonson, 1738; Hogarth used a previous design by Vanderbank and this was the only illustration included in Tonson's edition. His other six illustrations were rejected.
