Commentary | In the upper part, a medallion with don Quixote's portrait (his profile, as a classical figure) and the inscription: "D. QUIJOTE DE LA MANCHA CAVALLERO DE LA TRISTE FIGURA Y DE LOS LEONES"; around it, different symbols from the novel: windmill, lance, barber basin, wax taper, scimitar, club, chains and wineskin.
In the lower part, Sancho with his sword (as represented since Paris: Jacques du Clou and Denis Moreau, 1618; and London: Blounte, 1620), his donkey and Rocinante. Good drawing and engraving; classicist. Don Quixote has been represented with certain dignity that does not appear in the following illustrations. |
