Commentary | Well-known scene and composition.
In the foreground, don Quixote fallen on the ground and defeated by the Knight of the White Moon (Sansón Carrasco). In the background, Sancho(?) and don Antonio Moreno. Scene set in Barcelona sea shore (port and galley). Very poor drawing and rough engraving; deficient inking/printing; worn block. |
Notes | 1 – Same wooden block first used for Madrid: Manuel Martín, 1765 (copied after Madrid: Juan de San Martín, 1741).
2 – Copied after Diego de Obregón’s illustration for Madrid: A. García de la Iglesia, 1674 (as copied for Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735). 3 - Also used for "Don Quixote defeats the Knight of the Mirrors" (14:2). |
