Commentary | In the foreground, Sancho's blanketing observed by don Quixote from behind the inn wall in the background.
Well-known scene; the illustration follows a conventional composition with little novelty. Drawing and engraving are acceptable, but some figures (the ones blanketing Sancho) are lightly forced. |
Notes | 1 - Plate I according to the order of publishing (March 9, 1782), not the chapter order.
2 - All the plates with the same Empire style frame; good decorative effect. 3 - In 1801 (London: Miller), Stothard represented this episode again; this second illustration is more realistic, but the composition does not change too much. 4 - In 1782, there are three English engravers called Grignion (Gregnion sometimes). Probably, it was Charles Grignion I or "the elder" who took part in this edition. |
