Commentary | Before Sancho leaves for El Toboso, don Quixote begins to do some somersaults (in the image only jumping) as part of his love penance.
Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). Quite acceptable engraving, but not remarkable. |
Notes | 1 - First copied for Madrid: Vega, 1804.
2 - It has not been copied Antonio Rodríguez' illustration for Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1797 (quite different), but Isidro and Antonio Carnicero's plate for Madrid: Ibarra, 1782 (and Viuda de Ibarra, 1787). 3 - Before this illustration, there were two other plates in 1797 edition: "Fruto que lograron D. Quixote y Sancho de haber librado á los galeotes" and "Pesado fin que tubo para D. Quixote y Sancho la relacion de Cardenio"; they have not been included in 1804 and 1840 editions. |
