Commentary | The illustration is a very free interpretation of Cervantes' text; it has been represented as a theatrical performance and the characters are supposed to be the priest, the housekeeper, the barber (shaving another man) and don Quixote (defeating someone) when the knight returns home after his first sally.
Maybe, the plate has been re-used from a different novel. The ornamental frame includes some don Quixote's symbols (lances, armour, helmet and shield); good decorative effect. Good engraving and shading. |
Notes | Wrongly placed in part II; it should appear in Chap. V, Book I, between pp. 22 and 23 in part I.
The plate is not signed either by the illustrator or by the engraver, but Río y Rico attributes it to Riley and Scott, who sign the frontispiece. The illustrator's signature seems to be erased. It is dated on February 15, 1794. |
