Commentary | Cervantes' portrait sat at a table and writing.
In the background, a library with books behind a curtain. Underneath, a tablet with Cervantes' name. Drawing and engraving are acceptable, but with some deficiencies (notice the eyes and the forced position of right hand). |
Notes | 1 - Despite the inscription "Joseph del Castillo la inventó y dibuxó", this is the model of Cervantes' portrait designed by William Kent for London: Tonson, 1738.
2 - The window with don Quixote and Sancho in the background has not been copied and Cervantes' figure has been turned. 3 - Copied after the portrait designed by Kent and newly-engraved by Jacob Folkema in 1739 (also in Amsterdam and Leipzig: Chez Arkstée & Merkus, 1768). |
