Commentary | In the center, the coat of arms of his Highness François-Charles Count of Velbruck surrounded by acanthus leaves and with the royal crown.
On the left, Athena (Wisdom) with her lance, helmet, Gorgoneion (shield with Medusa's head), olive branch, open book and bridles. Next to her, one angel holds a trumpet and the Auroboros (snake, symbol of eternity). On the right, a female figure (Prudence) with a small lamp and a closed book. Next to her, a stork and two angels. One holding a snake and a mirror; the other holding a palm leaf and a trumpet. In the background, columns and curtains. Remarkable engraving. |
Notes | 1 - This headpiece is not the same plate first engraved for La Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1746 (with a ducal coat of arms surrounded by acanthus leaves with the initials F. X. [François Xavier, Duke of Saxe and Royal Prince of Pologne] and the ducal crown).
2 - Unsigned. |
