Commentary | In Sierra Morena, don Quixote, Sancho and the goatherd encounter Cardenio, who begins to observe don Quixote carefully when the knight tries to embrace him.
The figures of the goatherd and Sancho are especially remarkable, very realistic. Drawing, engraving and shading are excellent. John Vanderbank represented this scene without the goatherd (London: Tonson, 1738). |
Notes | 1 - Same plate first engraved for Hogarth Illustrated (London: J. & J. Boydel, 1798, vol. 3).
2 - Re-engraved copy after Hogarth's illustration for London: Tonson, 1738; this is one of the 6 illustrations rejected by Carteret and Oldfield. |
