Commentary | Before Sancho leaves for El Toboso, don Quixote begins to do some somersaults (in the image only jumping) as part of his love penance.
The engraving is not too much remarkable; details represented with little care. Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). |
Notes | 1 - It has not been copied after Antonio Rodríguez' illustration for Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1797 (quite different), but after Isidro and Antonio Carnicero's plate for Madrid: Ibarra, 1782 (and Viuda de Ibarra, 1787). The copy was done after F. Miranda's engraving for Madrid: Vega, 1804.
2 - Before this illustration, there were two other plates in 1797 edition: "Fruto que lograron D. Quixote y Sancho de haber librado á los galeotes" and "Pesado fin que tubo para D. Quixote y Sancho la relacion de Cardenio"; they have not been included in 1808 edition. |
