Commentary | In the foreground, don Quixote fallen on the ground defeated by the Knight of the White Moon (Sansón Carrasco) on Barcelona beach.
In the background, Sancho, Antonio Moreno, the viceroy and others. Well-known scene; it has been represented almost with the same composition since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). Good engraving. |
Notes | 1 - Copy after F. Miranda's illustration for Madrid: Imprenta de Vega, 1804, which was also a copy after Antonio Rodríguez' illustration for Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1797.
2 - Before this illustration, there were two other plates in 1797 edition: "Sorprenden á D. Quixote los vandoleros", "Luce D. Quixote su gallardia danzando en un sarao" and "Pasa volteado Sancho por toda la chusma de la galera"; they have not been included in 1808 edition. |
