Commentary | Conventional composition.
In the foreground, Sancho's blanketing, while, from the background, don Quixote observes him. The quality of this illustration is due to the richness of details (see saint Jacob´s image, pilgrim's patron) and the diversity of gestures. Drawing and engraving are excellent (see Sancho's figue); more realistic than Coypel's designs. Trémolières' style is very close to Vanderbank or Van der Gucht's English styles. The figure of Maritornes (in the foreground with a bucket) has been copied from Coypel´s illustration "Don Quichotte attaché a une fenestre par la malice de Maritorme" (included in this copy). |
Notes | 1 - Print included in Cushing's extra-illustrated copy of John Bowle's edition (Salisbury: 1781).
2 - Wrongly included in chapter 16:1; it belongs to 17:1. 3 - The plate has no indications. It may be a copy after Aubert's engraving (Paris: chez Dupuis, c. 1733-39). 4 - Ashbee (art. 25) considers it as part of Gerard van der Gucht's set (London: since 1725). 4 - Schley engraved it again in a vertical format for La Haye: Hondt, 1746. |
