Commentary | Well-known scene and composition.
In the foreground, don Quixote fallen on the ground and defeated by the Knight of the White Moon (Sansón Carrasco). In the background, Sancho, don Antonio Moreno and the viceroy. Scene set on Barcelona beach (port and galleys). Drawing and engraving done to look archaic. |
Notes | 1 – Copied after the illustration for Barcelona: Juan Jolis, 1755 (and 1762), copied after Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735, badly copied after Diego de Obregón’s illustration (Madrid: Andrés García de la Iglesia, 1674).
2 - In the early editions, the same illustration was also used for "Don Quixote defeats the Knight of the Mirrors" (14:2); in the current edition, different illustrations (with light changes) have been drawn for each chapter. |
