Commentary As usual in Clark's illustrations, the scene follows a diagonal: from the left background (the galley slaves throwing stones) to the right foreground (don Quixote and Sancho protecting themselves).
The expressions of don Quixote and Rocinante are remarkable, and Sancho's figure too; his figure has been created with aquatint and color, almost without drawing lines.
Well hand-colored print; greens, yellows and ochers are well contrasted.
Notes 1 - Cushing Library also has a set including this illustration with some differences in color; the present illustration has been better hand-colored.
2 - Also in Edinburgh: Hurst, Robinson & Co., 1822.
