Ashbee only mentions 375 wood engravings (127 headpieces plus 128 tail pieces plus 120 full-page plates); "Bold, effective, vigorous, and full of imagination, as these compositions of Doré undoubtedly are, they fail to give entire satisfaction" (A247).
