It has one design by Agustín Navarro (Madrid: Sancha, 1797), three by Robert Smirke (London: Cadell & Davies, 1818), one by Antonio Carnicero (Madrid: Ibarra, 1780) and one by Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1723 and later years). It has 24 illustrations (xylographs) designed by Jean-Ignace-Isidore Gérard Grandville and Karl Girardet and engraved by Barbant, Paul Constant Soyer, Chevauchet and Quichon (not all signed); and ornamental headpieces and initials (not about Don Quixote). It was re-printed for Tours: Mame et Cie., 1858. "Charming series, the wood-cuts being of their kind as delicate as the engravings" (Ashbee, about 1858). Illustrations: This edition has 377 wood engravings designed by Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré and engraved by Héliodore Joseph Pisan, 128 headpieces (53 plus 75), 129 tail pieces (54 plus 75) and 120 chapter illustrations (62 + 58). Ashbee only mentions 375 wood engravings (127 headpieces plus 128 tail pieces plus 120 full-page plates); "Bold, effective, vigorous, and full of imagination, as these compositions of Doré undoubtedly are, they fail to give entire satisfaction" (A247). "Edición lujosísima, admirablemente impresa, con las conocidas composiciones de Gustave Doré que, con las de Tony Johannot, adornaran multitud de ediciones del Quijote, hechas en diversos idiomas, y fueron estimadas como la mejor y más artística interpretación de la novela de Cervantes, hasta que aparecieron las del insigne y genial artista español Urrabieta Vierge, por nadie superado, ni aun igualado, hasta hoy" (RR376).
