Description: First commentary based on the Quixote. It is a four part miscellaneous volume in verse and prose. It includes humorous anecdotes and quotations from little-known contemporaries. Shakespeare is thrice mentioned but Gayton regarded Ben Johnson as his intellectual father.

Description: Front paste down has armorial bookplate of the Rev. John Bowle, and a note indicating the book was given by the Rev. Percy of Norththumberland House to J. Bow[le], April 27, 1769. All annotations in the inserted leaves were written by John Bowle in his own hand and thus served for editing his 1781 famous critical edition of Don Quixotw, also at the Cushing. Bound in early quarter calf over marbled boards, both covers detached. The text block was detached and rebound with a new leaf inserted for each original leaf to provide space for annotations. Part of the Thomas F. Collison and Elizabeth Mason Collison Cervantes Collection donated by Bob and Malinda Wolter.
