Illustrations: Cushing's copy has a portrait of Cervantes, six engraved vignettes (one on each title page) and 29 illustrations by Daniel-Nicolas Chodowiecki engraved in copper by Daniel Berger. Some copies appeared only with 24 illustrations. Others have these 24 (numbered I - XXIV) plus five (numbered A - E) from the Weimar/Leipzig: Fritschischen Buchhandlung, 1775 edition, now newly engraved by Berger. These illustrations by Chodowiecki are different from those in the Almanac Généalogique, Berlin, 1771.
Description: Reproduces the text of the 1775 edition. Volumes I-IV are about Cervantes' Quixote (one portrait, with four vignettes and 19 illus.); and volumes V-VI are about Avellaneda's Quixote" (two vignettes and ten illustrations).

Illustrations: Contains four frontispieces (two repeated): the first one designed by Antonio Carnicero and engraved by Fernando Selma, and the second one designed by Pedro Arnal and engraved by Juan de la Cruz. Also has a portrait of Cervantes designed by José del Castillo and engraved by Manuel Salvador Carmona, a map by Tomás López and José de Hermosilla (Río Rico places the map in volume II; in Cushing´s copy, it appears in volume I). Includes 31 chapter illustrations designed by Antonio Carnicero (19), José del Castillo (7), Bernardo Barranco (2), José Brunete (1), Gerónimo Antonio Gil (1) and Gregorio Ferro (1), engraved by J. "In spite of the important position which these engravings hold among the illustrations to Don Quixote, great praise cannot be bestowed on them; they are generally stiff and conventional in design, without power, grace, or movement; nor is the engraving, as a rule, good. They are valuable, however, on account of the costume" (Ashbee 72, p.35).
Description: Deluxe edition with a revised text in Spanish, taken from the second Madrid, 1605 edition by Juan de la Cuesta. It is believed to be the princeps at the time. First edition produced by the Spanish Royal Academy (Real Academia Española).

Illustrations: Contains two vignettes used for four title pages (each one appears twice) after Savery's frontispieces (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657) and 43 vignettes (39; four of them are repeated twice) included in the text at the head of the chapters. Same wooden blocks first used for Madrid: Manuel Martín, 1765 (copied after Madrid: Juan de San Martín, 1741). They are copied after Obregón's illustrations (Madrid: A. García de la Iglesia, 1674) and the engravings in Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735. They follow the tradition of Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 and later editions) and Bouttats (Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73). "These wood-cuts are rough, crude, and more curious than beautiful" (Ashbee). Río y Rico refers to 44 illustrations, as it says in the title page, but there are only 43. Cushing's copy wanting volume II (one titlepage and 11 illustrations).
Description: Reprint of the Madrid 1765 edition. Cushing has volumes I, III and IV. The text follows second edition Madrid: Juan de la Cuesta, 1605, believed to be the princeps at the time.
