It includes a brief history of "DQ" illustrated editions (vol. I, pp. XVII - XXV) and the "Esplicacion de las estampas que contienen los cinco tomos de que consta esta edicion, y lugares donde van colocadas" (vol. V, pp. 427 - 436). Ashbee counts two of Cervantes' portraits and 31 chapter illustrations. Rio Rico counted one portrait, one frontis and 31 chapter illustrations; he does not mention the headpieces. "Although these engravings rank among the finest produced in Spain, their composition is not always happy, nor their drawing invariably correct. The figures are too lanky, and they lack movement. The costume, however, is fairly correct" (Ashbee). Givanel only refers to 29 chapter illustrations; "nada tienen de extraordinario, pues se limitan a continuar la tradición académica indígena" (Givanel 161-164). These illustrations also appear in Madrid: Casa del Editor, Calle Preciados 68, 1853 (3 frontis + 30 illus. one headpiece). The same three maps can be seen in Madrid: Sancha, 1798 - 1799.

Ashbee indicates that "the designs are very charming, and the engraving delicate and fine". Ashbee does not mentions the three maps. Rico says that the headpieces have been engraved "muy finamente y con mucha gracia y soltura". Rico just mentions 31 headpieces (he counts one less in volume VII). The edition was completed with volume IX (missing in Cushing's copy), where appeared Cervantes' portrait engraved by Juan Moreno de Tejada. According to Ashbee: "The portrait, size 92 by 55 mm, is in an oval frame resting on a base, on which is the name Cervantes; below outside the design we read: IOANNES MORENUS DE TEXADA omnes huius Historiae Lamellas praeter quatuor ab altero scalptas incidit Matriti Aetatis suae anno 60 ac 61".
