Illustrations: It has 10 double page illustrations, folded, after Coypel's designs newly engraved by Gerard van der Gucht. It also includes several ornamental headpieces not about Don Quixote (gallant scenes, birds, landscapes, Apollo and Daphne...). Ashbee refers in error to 22 illustrations. The same plates were later used in London: Walthoe, 1731, adding 12 illustrations more, also after Coypel's designs.
Description: Text now printed verbatim from the fourth edition of 1620. "With a curious set of cuts from the French of Coypel." First edition of the Quixote that includes the engravings of Charles-Antoine Coypel's designs; very rare. Originally done as paintings for the production of tapestries, they were often reproduced and included in numerous editions during the 18th century.

Illustrations: Has two frontispieces/headpieces and 33 vignettes in the text, copied and engraved by an unknown engraver after Diego de Obregón's designs (Madrid: Andrés García de la Iglesia, 1674) excepting frontispiece II and the illustration for DQ being arrested by the Brotherhood). 14 of the illustrations are copies after Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657) and Bouttats (Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73). Six are partial copies after the same. 12 illustrations are new designs by Obregón, and one is by an unknown designer. It has the same re-engraved plates previously used for Madrid: Antonio Gonçalez de Reyes, 1706; Madrid: Francisco Laso, 1714; Madrid: Hermandad de San Gerónimo, 1723; Madrid: Pedro del Castillo, 1723.

In Cushing's copy volume I (one frontis plus nine illustrations) and volume V (one frontis? plus five illustrations) are missing. There are 31 illustrations in volumes I - IV about Cervantes' Don Quixote. Five in vol. V are about Saint-Martin's Continuation, and three in vol. VI are about Robert Challe's Continuation. Illustrations: Includes two headpieces after Savery's frontispieces (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657) and 43 vignettes placed in the text at the head of the chapters (not 44 as it is said in the title page). All are unsigned. 32 are copies after Diego de Obregón's illustrations for Madrid: A. García de la Iglesia, 1674. Three of them appear twice in different chapters. Eight illustrations are not after Obregón: "DQ knighted", "Andrés' lashes", "Escrutiny of DQ's library", "Mambrino's helmet", "Beginning of the dispute at inn", "DQ defeats the Knight of the Mirrors", "Adventure of cats" and "DQ with the priest and bachelor". They follow the tradition of Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 and later editions) and Bouttats (Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73). "They are crude and rough in execution" (Ashbee). "Las láminas intercaladas que adornan esta edición son muy malas" (Río y Rico). Copied with less or more quality for Madrid: Juan de San Martín, 1741; Madrid: Pedro Alonso y Padilla, 1750-51; Madrid: Manuel Martín, 1765 (and 1782); Barcelona: Juan Jolis, 1755 (and 1762).
Description: Follows the Madrid 1730 edition published by Juan Antonio Pimentel, with some variants from Brussels, 1662. First edition without the tildes for 'n' and 'e'. The title page from Part I is wanting.

Illustrations: Includes an allegorical frontispiece and 67 chapter illustrations designed by John Vanderbank (frontis + 66) and William Hogarth (1) and engraved by Gerard van der Gucht (frontis + 61), Bernard Baron (1), George Vertue (1) and Claude du Bosc (4). Also has a portrait of Cervantes designed by G. Kent and engraved by George Vertue, and a tailpiece designed by John Vanderbank (I.V.) and engraved by P.F. Neither Ashbee nor Río y Rico or later authors have mentioned this tailpiece. Cushing's copy includes an ex-libris. The same plates (except the tailpiece) were also included in the English edition, London: Tonson, 1742.
Description: First deluxe edition ever printed, and first edition in Spanish published in England. Known as the Lord Carteret's edition, its publication was prompted perhaps by the interest of Queen Caroline, wife of King George II.

Illustrations: The complete edition with six frontispieces and 52 illustrations engraved by Prudent Bizot (only six are signed). There are 32 illustrations that refer to Cervantes' Quixote and are copied after Savery's plates (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 and Brussels: Mommarte, 1662) and Bouttats' plates (Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73). Twenty refer to Saint Martin's Continuation. The edition is reprinted after Lyon: Th. Amaulry, 1711 (and 1713 for vol. VI), which is also in Lyon: Th. Amaulry, 1718. Cushing's copy has four frontis and 20 illustrations (wanting 3 illus. in vol. I, five illus. in vol. II, four illus. in vol. III, one frontis and eight illus. in vol. IV, five illus. in vol. V and one frontis and seven illus. in vol. VI). Ashbee refers to wood-cuts, but they are copper engravings. "These engravings, if quaint, are spirited, fairly well drawn, and firmly engraved" (Ashbee 410). "Las láminas, tomadas de ediciones que ya hemos descrito, están grabadas de nuevo por Bizot, y son realmente malas" (Río y Rico).
