About the pictures

General statement: There are no authentic portraits of Cervantes; all portraits and representations are artistic recreations, including the much debated one attributed to Jáuregui, hanging at the Real Academia Española in Madrid, and used by The Cervantes Project as an icon. The collection here presented is comprehensive rather than exhaustive and attempts to provide a historical sample, from 1705 to 1900, illustrating the different ideological and aesthetic conceptions characteristic of their age and time.
