Commentary | When don Quixote tries to whip Sancho, the squire fights with don Quixote and throws him on the ground.
It has been represented during the day, but it should be at night. Bad drawing and lithograph. |
Notes | Wrongly-placed in chapter 34:2; it should be in 60:2.
Copy after Francesco Novelli's plate XXX for Venice: Alvisopoli, 1818 (and 1819); Bedini has eliminated Rocinante and the donkey and the night light effects; he is worse illustrator than Berselli. Novelli copied and inverted it after Bonard and Cars' illustration for Paris: Huart, 1733 (also in Paris: David Fills, Damonneville, 1741 by Bonard and Laurent). In 1733 and 1741, in the background, the hanged men were represented; now and in 1818, they do not appear. The first representation of this scene appears in London: Tonson, 1738 by Vanderbank. |
