Commentary | Great composition with different groups and different actions; movement and confusion have been masterly-well suggested.
In the center of the composition, don Quixote drawing his sword (his figure is the center of attention); an officer approaches him from the right, while, at the same time, Cardenio arrives from the left to help don Quixote; on the left, don Fernando defeats another officer; in the left foreground, Sancho keeps fighting with the barber, both disputing the packsaddle; in the left background, Maritornes, the landlady, her daughter, doña Clara, Luscinda and Dorotea weeping and screaming (just sketched); and, in the right foreground, the servants of don Luis cluster around him to prevent him from escaping. See don Luis' accurate gesture when a servant catches him by the arm; "don Luis, a quien un criado suyo se atrevió a asirle del brazo porque no se fuese, le dio una puñada que le bañó los dientes en sangre" (45:1). |
