Commentary Well-known scene since Savery (Savery: Dordrecht, 1657); when don Quixote tries to enter into Montesinos' cave cutting away some brambles with his sword, a multitude of crows and choughs (they look more like owls in Johannot's vignette) flows out of the cave and knocks don Quixote down.
Also in the scene Sancho and the bachelor's cousin.
Notes 1 - Acceptable copy after Tony Johannot's illustration for Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37.
