Commentary | On the left, don Quixote completely hanged by his hand tied to an inn window.
On the right, Rocinante moving towards one of the mares of the travelers (servants of don Luis' father) that have just arrived to the inn. Rocinante's figure is very remarkable. Dark setting; drawing and engraving are quite acceptable as a whole; don Quixote's expression is little worked. |
Notes | 1 - Same plate first used for Paris: Furne, 1858 (also in 1861) copied after the illustration first appeared in Paris: Mequignon, 1821 (and 1822).
2 - Despite de signature "H. Vernet del.", this illustration was designed by Lami; this is a mistake of the engraver that has copied it. In 1821 the plate is signed by Lami. 3 - Wrongly-placed in chapter 53:2. |
