Commentary | Well-known scene since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, c. 1728-31).
Duchess' maidens go into don Quixote's room suddendly, frightening don Quixote and doña Rodríguez; "con un gran golpe abrieron las puertas del aposento, y del sobresalto del golpe se le cayó a doña Rodríguez la vela de la mano" (48:2). Rich setting (canopy, furniture, cage with bird, ceiling carvings...). Detailed engraving. The cat refers to a previous adventure. |
Notes | 1 - Plate newly-engraved by A. Blanco with light changes after the illus. in Madrid: Ibarra, 1782.
2 - Dated in 1844. |
