Commentary | The scene is well-known, but Doré has resolved it with certain novelty; don Quixote ready to fight with the lion has been placed in the background (not in the foregound as traditionally), and don Diego de Miranda and Sancho appear riding away towards the foreground to observe don Quixote from a safety distance (not running away towards the background such as in previous editions).
Notice also the lion presenting its hind-quartes to don Quixote (accurate to Cervantes' text); it improves the humour of the scene. Good drawing and engraving; the figures of don Diego and Sancho are especially remarkable. |
