Commentary | At night, don Quixote, Sancho, the Duke and the Duchess observe the appearance of a procession of penitents with lighted wax tapers, lute and harp musicians and a triumphal cart with a nymph and the figure of Death.
Excellent drawing and engraving; notice the black and white contrasts, the taper light effects, the carefully-done shading... The gloomy atmosphere is quite in keeping with Romanticism and Doré's liking. |
