Commentary | Well-known scene since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1724).
Duchess' maidens go into don Quixote's room suddendly, frightening don Quixote and doña Rodríguez; "con un gran golpe abrieron las puertas del aposento, y del sobresalto del golpe se le cayó a doña Rodríguez la vela de la mano" (48:2). Rich setting (canopy, furniture, cage with bird, ceiling carvings...). The cat refers to a previous adventure. Drawing and engraving are quite acceptable. |
Notes | 1 - Despite the inscription "Antonio Carnicero delt.", it is a copy after Isidro and Antonio Carnicero's illustration for Madrid: Ibarra, 1782. |
