Commentary | Great representation of this well-known episode. The Knight of the White Moon (Sansón Carrasco) draws his lance against don Quixote, who lies on the ground defeated.
Johannot has represented the viceroy's figure (or don Antonio's) with a gesture trying to stop the Knight of the White Moon, but this is not described by Cervantes. In the right background, Rocinante fallen on the ground and Sancho weeping. |
Notes | 1 - Reprint of Johannot's illustration for Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37.
2 - Maybe, Sebastien Desmarets: French engraver who worked since the end of 18th century. He engraved Zar Alexander’s portrait after Nigri (Benezit III, 525). |
