Commentary | In the foreground, don Quixote is prepared to fight with a lion while the lionkeeper opens the gate of the cage.
Sancho and don Diego de Miranda (or the carter) have been represented twice; in the foreground, what isn't accurate to Cervantes' text, and in the background, as they are represented traditionally. Drawing and engraving are acceptable, but simple. |
Notes | 1 – Turned and modified copy after Savery's illustration for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 (also in Brussels: Mommarte, 1662 and Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73); Clouzier's changes after the original illustration have made the new illustration quite less accurate. |
