Commentary | In the foreground, Dorotea washing her feet in a stream and "combing" her hair while, from the background, the priest, the barber and Cardenio observes her.
Well-known scene in 18th century editions since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, c. 1734), Vanderbank (London: Tonson, 1738) or Hayman (London: Millar, 1755); the same composition without many changes. Drawing and engraving are acceptable. |
Notes | 1 - Copy with fewer details after Lefebvre's illustration (Paris: Didot-Deterville, 1799); also previously copied by Bigant for Paris: Chez Gide, 1806 and Paris: H. Nicolle, 1809 and by Macret for Paris: Briand, 1810.
2 - Same plate first engraved for Paris: Renouard, 1812. |
