Illustrations: Contains a portrait of Cervantes designed by Leonardo Alenza y Nieto and engraved by Alejandro Blanco y Asensio dated 1844 and 23 chapter illustrations designed by Isidoro and Antonio Carnicero (one for RAE's Madrid: Ibarra, 1780 edition and 22 for RAE´s Madrid: Ibarra, 1782 edition) newly engraved by Alejandro Blanco (1844). The original plate V by A. Blanco ("DQ and the sheep") was lost, so it was re-engraved by Charles William Sherborn in 1893. "The engraving of Blanco is far superior to that in the edition of Madrid, 1782" (Ashbee).
Description: Includes a Preface and 468 items with detailed descriptions: 1-327 refer to illustrated editions or to illustrations issued separately, plus a Supplement with a list of further unseen items, and sections on "Pictures, statues, Tapestries." Printed for the author and issued by the Bibliographical Society (Illustrated Monographs III); based largely on Ashbee's own collection, now at the British Library and the Hispanic Society of America in New York.
