Commentary | Two different scenes in the same plate:
The first one, in the background: don Quixote and Sancho enter Sierra Morena, where they find a dead mule. The second one, in the foreground: mad Cardenio fighting with don Quixote, already fallen on the ground, and Sancho; a goatherd tries to help them. Drawing, shading and engraving are excellent; detailed figures and setting; good gestures and expressions; remarkable style. |
Notes | 1 - Based on Savery's illustration (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 and later editions). |
