Commentary | Two different scenes in the same plate:
The first one, in the background: don Quixote and Sancho mounted on Clavileño while some Duke's servants simulate its flight with bellows and torches; the Duke and Duchess observe them. The second one, in the foreground: don Quixote, Sancho and Clavileño fallen on the ground after the explosion of the wooden horse; some fire crackers are still flying around them; a lance with a parchment announces the end of the adventure. Very original illustration. Drawing, shading and engraving are excellent; detailed figures and setting; good gestures and expressions; remarkable style. |
