Commentary This illustration and the two previous are well-known since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657); Johannot has divided the episode, traditionally represented in one only scene, in three.
Now, the appearance of Marcela.
Very well-resolved scene with a vertical composition (accurate to Cervantes' text, Marcela has to appear over some rocks); the scene, with an almost shinning Marcela and the shepherds knelt, reminds the traditional representation of The Announcement to the Shepherds.
The figures of the shepherds (see their gestures and faces) are quite remarkable.
Notes 1 - Same illustration and wooden block first used for Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37.
