Commentary Reference to don Quixote's speech about arms and letters; "porque, de faldas, que no quiero decir de mangas, todos tienen en qué entretenerse" (38:1).
Here, there is an ambiguous and ironical use of language; "faldas" are the regular salary of a man of letters, and "mangas" refer to some kind of gift or bribe.
Johannot has known how to interpreted Cervantes' irony quite well.
Notes 1 - Same illustration and wooden block first used for Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37.
